Welcome Back

Dear ORLA Families,

Thank you for your patience as we transition into distance learning this fall. We are so very excited for school to start and to meet your student.  There is a lot that will be different as we start the school year but our love of teaching your student remains the same. 

Enclosed is a lot of back to school information packed into the newsletter. Please read through all of the information.If you have any questions please reach out to the office staff. Their contact information will be included at the end of the letter.

The First day of school hConnect and MAST

All students will have synchronous (live) classes in hConnect and MAST programs. To make things a little easier for students and parents, teachers will be emailing the Zoom link for the FIRST DAY of class.  After the first day of school the link for zooms will be found in the students Schoology classroom. I have listed Schoology training information for parents/students under tech trainings below. 


1st day of school and 6-12th grade iConnect Orientations

If your student is registered for an iConnect class they need to attend 1 of the following orientations.  Please choose 1 date/time to attend. Please disregard this if you’ve already signed up for a time. Schedule Orientation

Returning Students - 9:00-9:30 a.m.

New Students - 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.

Distance Learning Attendance 

Your student needs to mark attendance for every day that they have a class and this should be done before the first class of the students day. If they forget they can complete attendance that day anytime before 11:45pm


Students will need to complete attendance through the OSD portal each morning by logging into the portal and then Schoology. Students should start this process at 8:55 since school starts at 9:00 AM


Absence Procedures

If your student will be absent please call the Attendance Line 360-596-7773 or the front office at 360-596-7730 to call in a student absence.  If your family is planning a vacation or a planned absence that will take your child out of school for more than 3 days, complete a planned absence form and submit it to the office for approval at least 2 weeks before the planned absence. As it is in all schools, it is the school’s legal obligation to monitor student attendance and issues related to excessive tardiness.  In cases of frequent absences/tardiness, we will attempt interventions to improve student attendance.  Please refer to the OSD Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for additional information. 


Checking Out Materials

Students will be able to check out books through the portal and the online system.  Book pick-ups days and times will be announced at a later time. 


2019-2020 Yearbooks


Yearbooks are still available for purchase!

We have yearbooks available for purchase for $28. This year all of our programs are in one hardbound book. One section covers world news and current events for our unprecedented school year.  Contact [email protected] with questions. 

To purchase a yearbook go to orla.osd.wednet.edu and click on the Payment Portal Link at the very bottom of the page.  Use your Skyward login.  Once logged in, select Yearbook and pay $28 with your credit or debit card at check out.  Please keep your receipt. Your yearbook will be available for pick up during the supply pickup day.  Thank you for your support!

Volunteering 

ORLA Montessori provides many volunteer opportunities for parents and family members.  If you plan to chaperone field trips or help in the classroom you must complete and be cleared.  All volunteers must complete the online volunteer application YEARLY.  The form is located on the school district website prior to their volunteer time.    http://osd.wednet.edu/community/volunteer

Synchronous: Live Instruction

Asynchronous: Pre-recorded instruction

What it is:

  • Student and teacher have a scheduled time/task to be completed at a specific time

  • Could include: class meetings, direct instruction or live collaboration

  • Used to introduce, reinforce, practice, apply or extend

  • Short periods of instruction (whole or small group instruction)

  • Students interacting with one another (whole class or in small groups)

  • Students working on assignments with support from teacher or paraeducator

  • Family/student support time to ask questions

  • Small group or 1:1


What it is:

  • Opportunities to learn through enriching offline lessons

  • Recorded by teacher and/or teacher teams or specialist (share the workload)

  • Flexible time and/or day when the task is completed; allows students to engage at any time and rewatch if needed

  • Where teachers will deliver the majority of core instruction so students can access if they do not attend live sessions

  • Videos are great for building a foundation for further learning

  • Embedding questions in video’s can improve student interaction and provide you with formative assessment

What it is not:

  • Continuous hours of time on a computer

  • Lecture style for long periods of time

  • New learning which is completely dependent on student being in the live session



What it is not:

  • Lengthy videos: Optimum time for pre-recorded video is under 6 minutes; engagement drops after 9 mins.

  • Cookie cutter polished content from other sources: it doesn’t need to be pretty, it needs to be personal
